History

Iconic moments in Shift Medical history

In July 2016 we formed the social media-based group “Augmented and Virtual Reality in Healthcare”, bringing together enthusiasts and experts eager to advance healthcare with immersive technology. Starting as an online community, we overcame early challenges, innovating in VR and AR for medicine and healthcare.

Our collaborative efforts on social media led to a worldwide exchange and creating a common language betwen the various disciplines, making Medical Extended Reality a pivotal force in XR healthcare advancements.

In September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Medical Extended Reality group hosted the world’s first interdisciplinary VR congress, bringing together IT experts, medical professionals, and government officials in a fully immersive and interactive virtual world.

This pioneering virtual event allowed for safe, immersive collaboration across sectors amid the pandemic, demonstrating VR’s potential in facilitating crucial interdisciplinary dialogue over distance during challenging times.

In 2022, our Medical XR congress transitioned to an in-person event, emphasizing the unique benefits of face-to-face interactions for critically discussing and experiencing medical XR solutions.

This gathering showcased the tangible impact of direct collaboration, allowing participants to fully experience and refine XR technologies onsite in Heidelberg/Germany and highlighted the irreplaceable value of physical meetings in advancing healthcare innovation.

In 2023, the Medical Extended Reality congress was augmented with a 3-day workshop dedicated to developing on-site Medical XR applications. This effort, conducted with utmost transparency, set a new standard for open innovation in the field. The collaborative and inclusive approach was celebrated by the scientific, medical, and tech communities, garnering acclaim in the prestigious Nature Digital Medicine Journal for its groundbreaking contributions to healthcare technology.

2024 Shift Medical has evolved into a multifaceted, interdisciplinary platform for Medical AI and Spatial Computing, encompassing our two future key areas, such as Consulting and Congress.

This new orientation highlights its comprehensive approach in integrating medical expertise, technological innovation, professional consulting, and dynamic community interaction within the Medical AI landscape.
